VE Day Cocktails from Breedon Hall

At award winning Breedon Hall in beautiful Derbyshire Charles and Charlotte Meynell are in full lockdown mode as is everyone else in hospitality.

Thinking ahead, they’re preparing for their eventual reopening with a series of secluded scenic walks and places to visit far from the madding crowd. So that guests are reassured that their countryside visit is safe, their self-contained holiday cottages will be the first to reopen offering peace and quiet yet still within the heart of the village, not far from the shop-cum-Post Office and, when open, two delightful pubs. Charles has been keeping friends and clients alike entertained by his regular postings on social media running through every cocktail that you have ever heard of – from a New Orleans and Cuba Libre’s to a Wild Irish Rose. As he says, at least in the hospitality industry there’s an interesting drinks cupboard to choose from!  He has made us a couple of delicious cocktails.

The first is our very own Cheer VE Day cocktail, a pink variation on the classic Margarita and one that we will certainly be enjoying on Friday. The second is a countryside classic, The Hedgerow Martini. Try it now with frozen fruit right through to harvest time. Of course you can substitute any gin but Bertha’s Revenge looks worth investing in!

Cheer VE Day Cocktail

Celebrating VE Day. It also slips down exceedingly well.

60ml tequila

25 ml sugar syrup

25 ml cranberry juice

30 ml Cointreau or orange liqueur

25 ml lime juice

Mix the sugar syrup and lime in a shaker, add the tequila, Cointreau, and cranberry juice, add ice and shake vigorously. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

Hedgerow Martini

A 'Hedgerow Martini' created with the excellent Bertha's Revenge pure Irish gin made from milk! A first-class gin that easily passes the Martini test and is difficult to resist ...

To make, 1 x shot of Bertha, 2 shots sloe gin, 1 shot lime juice, 2 shots Elderflower cordial, 2 fresh blackberries, shake up in ice then strain into frozen glasses using a couple of frozen blackberries as garnish. Fan-bloody-tastic! #berthasrevenge #ginlicious #breedonhall #cocktailsalround — at Breedon Hall.
